new augenschmaus
Filed in augenschmaus, eye candy, 6.30.10, 10:27 pm by shansI have been traveling for the last two and a half weeks and will continue to be on the road for another week. While I’m *super* anxious to get back to my hotplate, melted beeswax, fabric and chicken wire in my Vancouver studio, I am enjoying the break from encaustics and trying to snap photos [...]
wax + video installation
Filed in augenschmaus, eye candy, 6.17.10, 4:07 pm by shansAfter discovering this video for Amnesty International today, my little brain has been on overdrive thinking about the possibilities of collaborating with my husband on video installations. Any other encaustic artists out there who can’t help but see the world as one big ball of waxy possibilities?! ;)

a hard pill and more augenschmaus
Filed in augenschmaus, eye candy, 5.28.10, 6:18 pm by shansI just received word that there was a “scheduling glitch” at Hambidge: the north Georgia facility where I was supposed to do my upcoming two week residency. While it is certainly a disappointment, I remain grateful for the opportunity to visit family and friends instead.
Perhaps another time and another place for dreaming up and creating [...]
installation art, augenschmaus and a dream
Filed in augenschmaus, eye candy, 5.19.10, 3:02 pm by shansLast week, some of my recent work was compared to Magdalena Abakanowicz’s. A high compliment that I won’t soon forget. The compliment was a generality– that is, it was only meant to say that my work could be seen to go in a similar direction: large scale installations with an acute awareness of materiality and [...]
residency day 4
Filed in Every day art, augenschmaus, eye candy, in the studio, new work, residency, 4.30.10, 1:14 am by shansPhaedra and I spent the day in the studio — listening to classical and celtic music, drinking tea,
collecting materials:
taking walks and finding plenty of augenschmaus everywhere:
discovering artists we love:
{Susan Benarcik}
{Eva Hesse}
working on our own artwork:
and in general, getting into mischief. :)
augenschmaus
Filed in augenschmaus, eye candy, grad school rants, 3.26.10, 1:14 am by shansAs part of my weekly schedule, I spend at least a couple of hours researching contemporary artists and engaging with their work and letting their creativity fuel my own. For me, (currently knee deep in grad school papers and projects) I rely on this time of augenschmaus to not only keep me inspired, but to [...]
in the studio today
Filed in Every day art, eye candy, in the studio, new work, 2.1.10, 11:57 pm by shansI spent a couple of hours in the studio today messing around and having good conversations with my materials. A large part of art-making, I’ve come to conclude, is dialoguing with the “stuff” to see what works and what doesn’t. Sometimes the materials push back, and sometimes they do exactly as they’re told. :)
Old books [...]
some augenschmaus
Filed in eye candy, 1.29.10, 1:46 pm by shansHere are some pieces of art that I can’t take my eyes off.
I am stewing on these – both conceptually and visually – as I prepare to get back into the studio this weekend and begin some new pieces. Nothing like some augenschmaus to inspire and motivate!

New Year, new aesthetic
Filed in eye candy, grad school rants, new work, 1.3.10, 10:29 pm by shans2010 looks to be a promising year of growth, artistically. Judging by the work I produced in the last 2 weeks, my work seems to be heading in a more sculptural direction, and my aesthetic is changing into a more simplified, organic color palette with stylized ink drawings, layered translucent dress patterns, pantyhose and book [...]
