Nihonga Day 3
Filed in Every day art, art and faith, grad school rants, in the studio, 7.14.10, 7:56 pm by shansToday Mako taught us a bit more about the process of layering,
how to use a mortar and pestle to grind pigments (if they need to be finer)
and we then got to make our own batch of ochre.
After Mako talked about the need for wonderment and play in the art-making process this morning, I decided to [...]
kids, don’t try this at home
Filed in augenschmaus, encaustic technique, 6.22.10, 2:31 pm by shansA new technique that I’m dying to try!
wax + video installation
Filed in augenschmaus, eye candy, 6.17.10, 4:07 pm by shansAfter discovering this video for Amnesty International today, my little brain has been on overdrive thinking about the possibilities of collaborating with my husband on video installations. Any other encaustic artists out there who can’t help but see the world as one big ball of waxy possibilities?! ;)

residency day 7
Filed in augenschmaus, in the studio, residency, teaching, workshop, 5.4.10, 2:46 pm by shansThis was the last day of the residency. Phaedra and I finished up the weekend encaustic workshop,
went for a walk,
and tried to soak up the last few minutes we had with each other in such a beautiful place.
and one of my personal favorite photos of the weekend. (I have no idea how both of us [...]

residency day 2
Filed in Every day art, in the studio, residency, 4.27.10, 11:50 pm by shansToday was a productive day! But before I show you my artwork, I thought I’d show you a few pictures I took today from around the Guild.
(You can get the full tour by seeing my pictures here)
And here’s what I worked on all day today: more seed pod-like shapes. The first one I did was [...]
residency at the Guild (day 1)
Filed in art and faith, augenschmaus, in the studio, residency, teaching, 4.26.10, 9:06 pm by shansIt’s a visual artist’s dream come true = time away in a beautiful location and a great studio space to work in. For the next few days, I’ll be doing an “artist residency” here at the Grunewald Guild in Leavenworth, WA. Later this week, I will be co-teaching an encaustic workshop with my friend [...]
my mentor
Filed in Uncategorized, 3.29.10, 3:01 pm by shansAs I’ve mentioned before, this semester I’ve had the amazing privelege of working under an encaustic artist here in BC: Erica Grimm-Vance, whose work I have admired for some time. She’s given me solid critique and helped me push my work into the more sculpture / installation world. Beyond that, she has inspired me in [...]
in the studio today
Filed in Every day art, in the studio, new work, 2.16.10, 12:21 am by shansThis is new piece I worked on all day today in the studio. I attempted to create a pseudo-landscape by using book covers and threaded spines as the land, and a dried hydrangea (resembling a tree) growing out from it.
While I’m content with this piece for now, I hope to push this concept further in [...]
in the studio today
Filed in Every day art, eye candy, in the studio, new work, 2.1.10, 11:57 pm by shansI spent a couple of hours in the studio today messing around and having good conversations with my materials. A large part of art-making, I’ve come to conclude, is dialoguing with the “stuff” to see what works and what doesn’t. Sometimes the materials push back, and sometimes they do exactly as they’re told. :)
Old books [...]
