Nihonga Day 11
Filed in Every day art, art and faith, in the studio, new work, 7.26.10, 8:40 pm by shansToday
I sized the inside of a book cover
to prep the surface for working on it later!
And spent some time working on these 3 panels:
adding mica,
and burnt umber,
then spraying water on top to get more texture.
There are plenty of more layers to put down on these pieces, but for the rest of the afternoon I worked [...]

getting my batches ready
sumi-ink, sprayed with some water
I thought I’d try my hand at some more unusual sources of pigment. So today’s experiment: blueberries!
Meanwhile, on the other side of the studio…
Jess began experimenting with water and sumi-ink dropped onto her conte drawing.
Then I heard a giggle and a “whoa!” [Jess had [...]

before and after
Filed in before and after, in the studio, new work, 3.29.10, 2:48 pm by shansDo you ever feel like a piece of art you make just doesn’t “feel right” after you’ve made it? Below are the before and after shots [...]

Filed in Every day art, in the studio, new work, 2.20.10, 2:38 am by shansI went back at it today to wrap up this piece by adding a dried hydrangea and a few extra layers of wax. (The images aren’t the best, so I’ll take more later, but I wanted to get these up right away!) Here’s the result of “By Its Cover” #4:
And I managed to crank [...]

Filed in Every day art, in the studio, new work, 2.18.10, 9:53 pm by shansFor the last two days, I’ve been fighting a cold. It’s the first time since coming to Vancouver that I’ve gotten a cold– I blame it on the weather going from see-my-own-breath cold to I-can-wear-flip-flops warm.
Regardless, I knew if I wanted to make the most of my break from classes, I had better get in [...]
in the studio today
Filed in Every day art, in the studio, new work, 2.16.10, 12:21 am by shansThis is new piece I worked on all day today in the studio. I attempted to create a pseudo-landscape by using book covers and threaded spines as the land, and a dried hydrangea (resembling a tree) growing out from it.
While I’m content with this piece for now, I hope to push this concept further in [...]
in the studio today
Filed in Every day art, eye candy, in the studio, new work, 2.1.10, 11:57 pm by shansI spent a couple of hours in the studio today messing around and having good conversations with my materials. A large part of art-making, I’ve come to conclude, is dialoguing with the “stuff” to see what works and what doesn’t. Sometimes the materials push back, and sometimes they do exactly as they’re told. :)
Old books [...]
