Come check us out in Studio 103!

I'll have a mix of new and old things available for purchase:

And my studiomate, Phaedra, will have some things available for sale too!

{SATURDAY}

10 am-4 pm

Golden Belt  |  Open Studios and Cow Parade

807 E Main St, Durham

If you didn't get a chance to experience the Third Friday event, you're in luck-- art studios will be open from 10 am - 4 pm.  You won't want to miss The Cow Parade where there will be 80+ life sized painted cows (painted by local artists) on display.  That's a heck of lot of cows, and a whole lotta art.  Stop by Studio 103 while you're there!

Come out and see what some of the Raleigh youth have been doing this summer!  There will be artist demos, face painting, snacks and of course, lots of zany and creative art.  And be on the lookout for the fabulous altered books!

Today I've been digging the work of artist Pamela J Wallace.  She uses industrial "cold" materials like steel, wire and plaster paired with natural and "warm" materials like abaca, wax and fibers in a fantastic way.  She has a background in sculpture, but she also works in 2-D / mixed media, installation and drawings.

As Two |  2010, 7 x 13 x 4 inches, wire, wood, abaca paper, encaustic

Antennae |  2010, 16 x 8 x 3 inches, wire, abaca paper, encaustic

Interuption of the Moirai (a dangerous precedent) |   2011, 37 x 41 x 7 inches, iron, fabric, thread, graphite

Contained like a Plastic Sprout | 2011, 11 x 9 x 4 inches, wire, abaca paper, forged iron, plastic ball

Altered Book class projects and Upcoming Encaustic Workshop

We just finished the "Altered Book" class and I must say the final projects ended up looking really great!  Some students chose to turn their book into a sculpture:

Others carved out windows and pockets into their books:

And some had so much fun combining techinques and textures:

The best part of the week?  Making a giant mess!  :)

There are a few spots left in the upcoming "Intro to Encaustics" workshop on August 10-12. This is a fantastic way to learn all about working in hot wax.  It's going to be a really fun weekend, so register asap to secure your spot!  For more information and to register, go here.

book art augenschmaus

This week I'm having a blast teaching an "Altered Books" class to 13 keen 6-8th graders and preparing new items for my etsy shop (sneak peek coming soon!)

I've been showing my students some pretty rad examples of altered books.  Today,  we looked at what uh-mazing things you can do with just an Xacto knife, a book, a big dose of patience and focus, and your imagination.

To get inspired, we looked at the work of:

Georgia Russell

Nicholas Jones

Noriko Ambe

Su Blackwell

Alexander Korzer-Robinson

Brian Dettmer

I can't wait to see what the students come up with!

I have long been an admirer of artist Jessica Drenk's work.  Her use of ordinary materials (like toilet paper, q-tips, pencils and mops), her natural color palette, and love of repeated, organic forms -- are all things close to my heart.  If you aren't familiar with her work, a thorough look at her website will delight your senses!
